Kaohsiong – Hengchuan (97km)

Learned from yesterday’s mistake, I set off this morning without map, just to explore and see what comes along my way. If I stuck to Cycle Route #1; I couldn’t go wrong.

Shortly after I set off, I was at Kaohsiong International Airport. Wasn’t a big airport, disappointedly small. Soon after that, I enter Pingtung County. I carried on and saw an interesting signage, it led me to a historical building, Fu Ji Historical House. Beautiful house built in 1901, a well kept historical place, it gave a glimpse of the living of the people hundred years ago, entrance fee is free, wonderful. Lingered around for about 30 minutes, though I like this place but I had long mileage to cover to Kenting, so I left. Rode all the way until I saw ocean on my right, didn’t realised I’d already in Fangshan Township. Fangshan is a small, modern friendly fishing village, people who walks on the street always carry a smiling face. Out of Fangshan, I was riding in Western Mainline Line, one of the most beautiful highway in Taiwan. Stunning Ocean view and mountain view at the right and left. But then, The wind kicked in. It came to me like a boxing opponent, hitting my face and wobbled my bicycle at several spots. I had to stopped and waited for the wind to subside to carried on. Didn’t realised now is winter in Taiwan, underestimated the wind. Yeah…The battle of the wind vs. the crazyoldhorse, began here.

2:30pm, I’ve rode in to Hengchun, an old castle gate with Chinese character carving “West Gate” caught my sight, seemed like I’m in a historical place without aware of. After researched, the history of this town could traced back to late Qing Dynasty, formerly known as Langchiao, this town was built over 130 years ago… Okay, I’m done with my ride today, decided to park a night here, Hengchun Old Town.

Checked in to a bag packer’s guesthouse, just behind the square of the old town, parked my bike and went out to strolled around the small old town. Disappointedly, very little historical remaining, mostly rebuild “not so modern” buildings. Cover the town by walking in less than 40 minutes. In the square, there are performers performing, artist painting, potter selling their handmade products…mainly involve with work of art. Before 5:00pm, all packed up and left cause of the wind and cold weather.
